Advocacy Key Asks
Government should amend laws and policies to protect children
Partners in Tanzania under Mschana Initiative and TECMN are advocating for the revision of the Marriage Act, 1971 increasing the age of consent for girls from 14years to 18 years.
Ongoing efforts to revise the Marriage Act (1971) of Tanzania
The Marriage Act, 1971 allowed girls to marry at the age of fourteen with the consent of the court, and from the age of fifteen with the consent of their parents. Through advocacy efforts led by Msischana Initiative and Equality Now initiated in 2018, the Marriage Act, 1971 was appealed and later been tabled for revision before House of Representatives to eliminate inequality between the minimum age of marriages for boys and for girls.
Regular tracking government resources to Family Planning
Over the years, the Government of Tanzania increased the resources allocated to procurement of Family Planning commodities, from Tshs 4billion to Tshs 14 billion in FY 2018/19. However, the disbursement rate of the allocated resources to FP was as low as 10% in FY 2018/19. FP Budget advocates pledged to double efforts and routinely track to engage government to increase the disbursement and expenditure of the government resources allocated to FP.
